this confuses me a little i use maya.... and normaly depends on the material i use but is this like the same thing as blurring the reflections........ or what... cos diffuse, reflectivity and stuff like that are normaly different things i can ajust cos isnt diffuse related to how the hot spot and the shadows wrap around an objects??

texturing and lighting is not my strong point..

It really depends on your renderer. Most engines simplify stuff and divide the reflection from the diffuse component. While an approximation, it works well in 99% of the cases. Although in the truth, "reflection" and "diffuse" components are a monolithic physical entity. This tutorial covers the concept of roughness itself, regardless of software, adapting it to specific aplications is beyond it scope.

ah .... so wouldnt just havin a reflective object with a type of bump map work too just making it fine and messing with the bump map options?

The default blur reflections should be faster and more optimized (it is there for a reason) But yes, very fine bump map is a possible implementation, although a bit inneficient.

ah okay,.... well there is most likely a material that has roughness built in to it or you could layer shaders....

It often is misnamed "glossyness" in some renderers. The effect however is a bit mashed up, you need to tune both specular and glossyness values to mimic different roughness curves.

well i phong material has gloss.... its pretty good for making metalic and plastic stuff. but it has a few other setting that i cant think of right now but that sounds the closes the the material you are describing.
